One brother stayed at home perfecting the Jelly Belly recipe, and the other brother set out on horse drawn carriage to sell their sweet concoctions near and far. Cut to 1960 and the fourth generation of Goelitz, now living in California, closed the doors of his factory in order to expand and increase business. Perfecting the recipe and partnering with other candymakers, eventually the process of "true-to-life" flavors were born. The very first flavors of Jelly Belly remain the most popular today: Very Cherry, Lemon, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Root Beer, Grape, and Licorice. The Jelly Belly Factory tour in California remains a popular tourist destination. Even Ronald Reagan once said that no meetings can begin without passing the jelly bean jar around. If candy isn't king, then it's at least the leader of the free world!
